quarry (my weekend, part two)

Today we drove to an old quarry, about an hour and a half out of Auckland. In the late 1920s, the Wilson Cement Works was demolished and left to decay. From what I gather, the Mahurangi river then broke its banks and filled the quarry site with fresh water, ducks and the odd eel. The remains of the factory are now protected and loom broodingly over the quarry; but the water is beautiful and clear and you can jump off the willow-lined edges straight into it, with no fear of ever finding the bottom. The photos, again, from my nasty little camera phone.
