chrismukkah, oy humbug!

I've watched:
The Shop Around the Corner, Bad Santa, Home Alone 2, Love Actually, the Melrose Place Christmas episode,* both of the Chrismukkah episodes from the OC and the episode of Seinfeld where Elaine accidentally slips a nip on her Christmas card. Two words: SETH COHEN.
I've eaten:
Steamed Czech dumplings filled with strawberries, doused in melted butter with a dollop of cream cheese. Roast wild boar, covered in a rosemary and thyme herb oil, served with whipped potatoes and red cabbage, followed with licorice ice cream and fra angelico on ice. A burger with bacon and cheese, also a sausage pizza, cheese pizza with extra mushrooms. Frozen coke. A suspicious tasting "ginger bread" frappaccino on the most humid day so far. I went to Winehot with my Pa and had a simple pork belly with new potatoes and (more) cabbage. At flat christmas, where several of the movies above were watched, I ate mushroom and ricotta empanadas and drank horchata for the first time (delicious!)
*"Does this gift cross the line between friendship and...romance?"

men of a certain age

When Han and I were at university we had two classes together, one of them was a media paper called 'understanding popular music' or something to that effect. We sat next to each other and wrote notes back and forth, generally about one of three things:
1. A boy in the class who we hated. He found the music of Moby really profound.
2. A girl in the class who we dubbed 'indie girl' and who had a tendency to name-drop, which was kind of redundant living in Wellington, where everyone already knows everyone anyway. She's famous now though and probably earns quite a lot so I guess that serves us right.
3. How much we loved Roy, our lecturer, and wished he was our dad.
This was probably the beginning of my experience with dad-crushes. Roy had a bushy moustache and a uniform of jeans and sweatshirts. He told us in lectures about buying his daughter an iPod and he had great taste in music.

The dad-crush has since evolved and I would say now, at least for me, is not just about men whose daughters we wish we were; my current list of dad-crushes includes men who are certainly too old for me and who, in-person in 2010 would hold little or none of the appeal that their younger selves continue to carry on screen, but who I continue to swoon over while watching repeats of old tv shows and films made before I knew what a crush was. Men like Colin Firth, Emilio Estevez, Kyle McLaughlin, Jeremy Irons, Dustin Hoffman, heck even Patrick Swayze... Men whom my crushes on probably have as much to do with wanting to be like the girls who loved them as the man (or the character) themself.
The updated list still includes men who I could never crush on in such a way, but who I wish I knew in a dadly or uncley way, who I could hang out and drink beer or whiskey with and who I could introduce to my friends. Men like Roy. Bill Murray is a good example of this type of dad-crush, the original dad-crush.

Perhaps the strangest of the dad-crushes are those that we share with our mothers. Han is in love with Daniel Day Lewis*, which forever grosses me out having accompanied my mum to in the name of the father - aged 7 or thereabouts - and sat through repeated viewings of the last of the mohicans (around the same time) on VHS. John Cusack is an embarassing one for me: I gagged at my mother's girlish infatuation with Martin Q Blank but later fell head over heels in love with Lloyd Dobler.

*I s'pose I kind of am too, watching that video, sigh
That photo at the top is of Bill Murray and is one of my favourite portraits ever

so charming

Look, its PACEY. He's being charming and is reading aloud from Dawson's Creek scripts at Pacey Con 2010.* He played "I Don't Wanna Wait" on a tiny CD player. He's even wearing a Pacey shirt. He handed out Dawson's Creek fan fiction he wrote himself to his fans. Can you imagine the joy I would have felt, had I wandered past? WHY ISN'T HE MY BOYFRIEND?
Pictures from ontd.

*apparently it was for a funny or die skit but I don't care, its still awesome and I bet it was all his idea, because he's PACEY.

squinting into the sunset

Last weekend we gave each other boys names, such as Keith, Bruce, Garth, Oliver and Darren. Mine is Rupert, which is, in fact, what my parents were going to call me if I was a boy.

My mother dressed us all as very eclectically and I imagine that as the only boy in the family, little Rupert would have had extra attention paid to his wardrobe. I see Mum dressing Rupert in a Croatian patchwork poncho over a Batman t shirt and raspberry coloured woolen cardigan, tucked into olive coloured corduroy pants held up by patterned suspenders with shiny little red gumboots. I envisage tiny John Lennon glasses, too.

Rupert probably would have been a bit reserved and shy, as you would be after being teased so mercilessly about your clothes at school. I think would have grown up to be adorable to the girls he tutored English Lit 101, especially when he took off his glasses to clean them during class and had to squint a little.

the prettiest star

I think well-cut white suits are my kryptonite. Especially if worn by someone playing The Prettiest Star or This Will Be Our Year for me on a white baby grand. I love the subversive decadence of louche men with shaggy beards and long hair wearing pristine, narrowly cut white dinner jackets. A white suit states an intention to be entirely impractical and a willingness to get very messy. They make me think of doubtful Graham Greene heroes sweating in the tropics, or Sebastian Flyte spiralling ever-downwards in Morocco. White suits don't denote innocence or purity, but the total opposite. Wearers attract trouble. Sweat, dirt and bloodstains are bound to sully an expensive white suit.

an excerpt

Years ago I picked up a sweet little book called Cute Guys. About once a year my flatmates and I reacquaint ourselves with its wisdom, and it truly has saved us all a lot of heartache, and time.
I think these excerpts are worth sharing:

Are Wimps Cute?
Yes, without a doubt, wimps are always cute. If you don't think the wimp who was in your Sixteenth-Century Scandinavian Literature class or the perfume copywriter down the hall can be called cute, trust us. You will soon.

A wimp enters adolescence a small, slight boy with beautiful eyes, who, terrified by larger boys or loud noises, becomes a quiet, introverted man. His childhood fears cause bullies to shun him. His only friends are girls, knowing they'll talk to him - and even listen occasionally.

A wimp is a cute guy because he needs love and understanding. He's really grateful when you are nice to him. Sensitivity and respect are more important that chest hair.

Wimps: pathetic, weak, cute. You'll probably want to yell "pull it together, Man!" at them in between all the sensitive love-making and poetry readings.

Are Nerds Cute?
Nerds are cute, unless they're not. It's not automatic, like with wimps. If you're willing to gamble, you could snag a very cute guy with very little trouble. A real bargain.

The nerd learns rudimentary social skills from the other nerds in his field, picking up an odd but of reliable information from the normal male who wants a term paper written. When first meeting the nerd, you will be put off by his manners and one-track conversation. Don't worry, this means you're normal.

Some nerds, you should be warned, are past saving. They are simply boring and recherche, though more likely to have a well-paying job.

Nerds sometimes are not cute.

Are Twits Cute?
It takes a lifetime to learn how to defuse the effectively armed and ranting twit.
The twit is frequently taken for a wimp, slightly less often for a nerd, because he also tends to be slight of build and loath to work up a sweat. Sadly, an unreformed twit is never, ever cute.

He makes pronouncements, not statements. When you score a conversational point, he will disparage your femininity.

This swinish self-congratulation prevents him from being cute, though not from success in politics. Whatever his power and eloquence, he'll never acquire the thoughtfulness and sensitivity needed to be truly cute until you leave him.

Twits are total jerk-faces, and irresistible.

So, there you go. Go for wimps first, then nerds, but never twits, unless they're reformed ones. Don't get fooled into thinking a twit is a wimp or a nerd. But, please, don't thank me, thank THE BOOK.

PS. Its from 1984, written by Fran Pelzman and Martha Thomses and there is almost no information about it on the internet.

take me where real animals are playing

The Kinks are my alltimefavouritenumberonebestever band because of this song:

"From the dew-soaked hedge creeps a crawly caterpillar"...It was the soundtrack to happy days sitting on my Daddy-o's shoulders. Seriously, this song makes me happier than any song ever has at any time in my whole entire life. Especially the gratuitous and joyful "la la la la la la la la la" bits. Go listen to the Kinks. They rule.

Also be sure to listen to "Animal Farm", from which I snipped the title of this post. Also, be sure to notice that the logo on their drum kit has little pants and shoes.

babes

Backyard Bill needs to stop it with all the hirsute babes. It makes me sad that there aren't any effortlessly stylish, bearded dudes with nice apartments in Auckland.*

Also, I think I love beards. Fascinating.

* I'm sure there are, but they're probably all hanging out with their girlfriends in secret grown up bars I don't know about.

Pictures from Backyard Bill (obviousl
y).

An afterthought: on reflection, I don't think these guys are "effortlessly" stylish. Noone could wear outfits like these without effort. END.

and also I love this, big time

Its been a bit of a Han-heavy week, huh? But have you seen this blog? I enjoying looking at the odd personal-style-blog-by-pretty-french-girls-with-chloe-shoes-and-nice-hair but I love looking at Le Petit Echo Malade more...its probably about time that someone thought of this. They're totally cute boys too.

Yeah, I know, that's why I play the drums - it's me active compensatory factor.

Sorry, the post title is one of the only Ringo lines that I can remember from a Hard Day's Night which was meant to be my segueway into saying that ringohaveabanana has put up some photos of NZ and Melbourne and it filled me with civic/antipodian pride!

In celebration, my favourite scene from the aforementioned film. I want this on DvD, dammit.

I think it is about time I bought a Dion and the Belmonts album.
Don't you wish you were going steady with Dion?

river kissed

This weekend we (along with some kereru and tui) watched dear friends become husband and wife under a canopy of native trees, danced to gypsy music under the stars, forded rivers and built dams, dipped baguettes in nutella and star gazed around a campfire. We all saw the same shooting star.

Nothing makes the earth seem so spacious as to have friends at a distance; they make the latitudes and longitudes.

About two years ago all of my closest friends started moving on with their lives. We all lived in Wellington together and had spent four years in each others' pockets. It was the time where I experimented, adventured, and figured out more about what I wanted.

In hindsight, it really was idyllic. T
here were issues and irritations, but now I appreciate the ease with which we all congregated and spent so much time together. It seems much more difficult these days.

Then we all up and left. There were plans to fulfil and ambitions to meet, so we left a city that we loved, but had begun to feel too small. Perhaps we spurred each other on; if they were leaving, well, then we had to leave too. For somewhere different, but equally exciting. It was a friend diaspora which scattered us across hemispheres.

We have survived - made new friends and found new places where we feel at home. But I suspect that the friends I found when I was on the cusp of joining the real world are the ones who have the strongest hold, and will be around for the longest.

Next week, a large chunk of us will meet again at a wedding in a forest. We're driving there together from Wellington and will spend the weekend celebrating, camping, "clambering, river damming and swimming". I can't wait.

my body's a zombie for you

I have a new favourite band. Dead Man's Bones are Ryan Gosling and Zach Sheilds and a children's choir from Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Their songs are about fun things like zombies and ghosts and they just sound really good.

As well as the one above, you should listen to Lose Your Sole, My Body's a Zombie for You (best lyric ever right?) and also read this slightly out of date article, it will tell you a lot more about them than I have.

Also, thanks to the lovely friend who inadvertently introduced me to them (and more new favourites), through the playlist made for some other lovely friends' engagement!

(The picture's from the Pitchfork article), and oh, I can't wait to see Blue Valentine!

ice cream saves the day, once more

Just had the marvellous realisation that my office contains all the neccessary components required to make an affogato. So I have done that, and am feeling extremely hooked up.

In celebration I present pictures of The Beatles drinking tea:
