oh I wish
Perfect: no make up (jealous), cheek bones, relaxed hair without a massive fringe, vintage jacket, brown silk shirt, vintage belt, blue velvet pants. Man.

I really like Rodarte. They did the ballet costumes for Black Swan and they've recently collaborated with Opening Ceremony. In case you didn't know.

velvet!
Lou loves velvet, I love velvet. I love what Courtney has done with Lonely Hearts' velvet shorts on her v. cool new website always/sometimes/anytime. The question is, do you go for the pants or for the shorts?
shorts
pants
All pictures from Always/Sometimes/Anytime, which is definitely worth a look or two. On an unrelated note, I bought some Mac Face and Body foundation as a birthday present to myself and I'm worried its too dark.

Check out this babe being a babe on a skateboard. His name is Kilian Martin and it was all for Man About Town. Does it remind you of West Site Story, too? Photos from Future Shock.

high or low?
I'm going to buy some white chucks today, the ones with the red and blue on them. I'm leaning towards low, I think. I will protector spray the chucks so I don't ruin them. And then they will be my chucks forever. I like this picture of Elvis wearing Chucks. It sums up how I think they are best worn: crisply, with letterman sweaters, slacks a la Take Ivy, with pre-fat Elvis.
Incedentally, this movie, Change of Habit, looks really good. That's Mary Tyler Moore with Elvis. Photos are from here.
When I was 16 I bought a pair of chucks that were black and had "Mangere" embroidered on them. At the time I thought I was being really funny and ironic, but in retrospect I think I was just being a little shit.
I've often moaned about my inability to dress as preppily as I would like. Never mind that I only seem to wear grey marl, blue denim, tan shoes and khaki anoraks: I just can't shake that grungy, rumpled feeling. Maybe white chucks will help. But perhaps the answer is that I should iron my clothes.
Another topic I frequently rant about is how much I love Linda Ronstadt in the 1970s. Well, get a load of these photos from her Simple Dreams tour. *Also get a load of JD Souther (far right). Babe.
Everyone on that tour was impeccably dressed. I love the flares, I love the short shorts, I love denim on denim, I love shirts tied up in knots, I love flowers behind ears, I love hirsute bands.

remember this?

Alexa Chung's Fall 2010 collection for Madewell, which previewed in February and was all over the internet for a while there, is finally launching this September. I imagine everything will sell out pretty quickly but am hoping I can work out some fancy shipping option and get my hands on the dress pictured above, the sheer polka dot blouse, and perhaps some aberdeen oxfords. There's a non-Alexa dress I'm a bit hung up on at the moment as well...
Alexa's collection is available online from September 9 in the states.

rodebjer
I would like to dress like this come summertime...I especially like the navy blue and stripy numbers. Oh, this is all Rodebjer SS11, and the photos are from style bubble and Marcella Mravec.

squinting into the sunset
Last weekend we gave each other boys names, such as Keith, Bruce, Garth, Oliver and Darren. Mine is Rupert, which is, in fact, what my parents were going to call me if I was a boy.
My mother dressed us all as very eclectically and I imagine that as the only boy in the family, little Rupert would have had extra attention paid to his wardrobe. I see Mum dressing Rupert in a Croatian patchwork poncho over a Batman t shirt and raspberry coloured woolen cardigan, tucked into olive coloured corduroy pants held up by patterned suspenders with shiny little red gumboots. I envisage tiny John Lennon glasses, too.
Rupert probably would have been a bit reserved and shy, as you would be after being teased so mercilessly about your clothes at school. I think would have grown up to be adorable to the girls he tutored English Lit 101, especially when he took off his glasses to clean them during class and had to squint a little.

the gentlewoman

I know that this is very old news, but today I finally purchased The Gentlewoman.
I love it. This is the most excited I've about a magazine since the last time I found a current NW in my flat's bathroom.
It just seems calm. Fun-loving without being overly whimsical. The font is nice and everyone in it seems very clever.

good news
for any stateside friends: the extremely cool and fun (I imagine, based purely on my own assessment of various interviews with them, as well as their label, blog, and now personal effects) ladies of Vena Cava are having a virtual garage sale*.
Good news also, I suppose, for those of us over here in the Antipodes: I'm pretty sure we can't participate. Bad news for our bookshelves who would benefit greatly from the additions of 'Bad Dates', 'Balls' and 'Disgraced', but good news for our wallets in any case.

It was a really good and apt term for all this online stuff.

summertime clothes

Ruby has just released their Summer 2010 look book, Bedrock. It makes me think of Elaine Robinson, or The Beatles video of "Another Girl" from Help. This is exactly what I want to wear in summer (indeed, what I want to wear right now). The collection also brings to mind early sixties beach party movies where everyone does the mashed potato in bikinis while The Monkees or Beach Boys or Wonders (not the on-e-dors) perform in sailor outfits. I tried to find pictures of this but it was suprisingly difficult.
I know that I often wax lyrical about Ruby. It's mostly because I think that with each new collection they have become more ambitious, while still remaining within the realm of affordability, which is a very important realm.
