new hair
I'm not going to any shows other than Karen Walker, which is hilarious because I only own one KW thing, and it is a T Shirt. I wish I had gone to Ruby and Twentysevennames, though, since I actually buy their clothes. But as a person who enjoys fashion but otherwise is totally removed from the Fashion Industry, I wasn't going anywhere. I especially like Ruby. They have beers and sausage sizzles at their sales, which is a sure fire way to make me buy things from them.

please see that her hair hangs long/it rolls and flows all down her breast

A friend, who I always thought was naturally raven haired, has dyed her crowning glory back to its original striking, vibrant red.
Its a brave move. She's separated herself from the pack of girls with befringed, long, straight, dark hair and come out of the rabbit hole that almost mythical thing: a ridiculously georgous girl with thick, long, ginger hair.
Apparently the gene that makes hair red is reccessive, so there are less natural red-heads on the street these days. Less than 2% of people in the world are ginger. Accordingly, girls with pre-rahapahelite hair always seem quite special and have an extra spark of sensuality,or something. I was incredibly suprised when I found out my friend had been dying her red hair dark brown - why give up such an amazing genetic gift?
Anyway. I've always had really, really dark brown hair. People often think its black. Dying it any other colour, like red or blonde, has never been an option. I'm of slavic stock and my colouring will only tolerate slight variations on the brown - I can go a little bit darker and, in fact, have currently got frosted tips (by which I mean, the ends of my hair have been lightened a wee bit)- but could never even consider going red, or blonde or any other colour for that matter.

if only we all could age this gracefully
There's so much to be said about growing up (not old, neccessarily!) gracefully. These ladies were cast by Joanna Sykes for her show at London Fashion Week. I love silver pants' hair...
My family goes grey early. I'm not saying I'm going to embrace it as a thirty or forty year old, but I think there is definitely something awesome about owning your greys.

lulu in hollywood

I have a picture of her above my 'dressing table'. This exact picture in fact, in her tutu; it seems to go well with the hat boxes and vintage cosmetics and sparkly costume jewelry I have laid out but never wear.
Looking at these pictures this morning make me want to dress up in tulle and sparkles and feathers and dark lipstick and go out somewhere dark and smoky for a drink this weekend.
Also she rocks the fringe/bob better than anyone and whilst I am 'growing' my hair - a painfully slow process, I swear - she makes me feel okay about it's general inability to ever get past chin length.

why should I listen to you, anyway? you're a virgin who can't drive.
Today I've been feeling really mopey.
This is making me feel better:
Dionne: [about Murray shaving his head] Why do you care what *he* thinks, Murray? I'm the one who has to look at you! What am I gonna do with you now? And right before the yearbook pictures? What am I gonna tell my grandchildren? You know what? That's it...
Murray: That's it!
Dionne: You wanna play games?
Murray: You wanna play games?
Dionne: I'm calling your mother!
Murray: Wait! Don't call my mom! Don't call my mom...

i love audrey

Four years ago I wrote this on Myspace:
"I think I might get my haircut like Audrey Horne.
But it's too straight. Maybe I could get a perm? Oh for that glorious few weeks I would have THE hottest hair out of everyone I know. Enough of this fringe bullshit, bangs blow.
Also, Whatever happened to Lara Flynn Boyle? It's sad really."
I remembered this yesterday after writing almost the same thing in an email to my mother. I am obsessed with this hair.
I buy records purely for their aesthetic value, and my most recent vinyl purchase was this, Stop Look and Listen Volume 5. I figure I can take it along with the Audrey pics to the hairdresser for clarity...
So, a perm? Hot rollers in the morning? Regular rollers overnight? Anyone know the best way to achieve these buoyant waves with naturally dead-straight hair?
Also, on an Audrey note, hooray for winter and tights and sweaters an knits and tweed!

pretty hair and pretty voices

Zooey Deschanel was the catalyst for this list, she has it all down to a T, even the pretty eyeliner which didn't quite make it into the title but is still something of a motif here. I fell in love with her as the she of She & Him (the him being M Ward, they're pictured together above), and subsequently with her sweet style and pretty hair and sticky outey ears. Also one time I was compared to her which, while being rather inacurate on all fronts, was most flattering.

Natasha Kahn of Bat for Lashes. She's also adorable, wears great clothes, and makes music I like listening to with girlfriends. The video for what's a girl to do is one of my most favourites.

Jenny Lewis. Sensing a theme here? Yeah, I'm predictable. But still. The Postal Service, Rilo Kiley, with the Watson Twins, I love her in all her incarnations, and she is playing here (in Melbourne) on April 2nd and 4th.

Lykke Li. Less alt-country-indie-american, more Swedish (you can be sure a lengthy post regarding my love of the Swedes will follow). Eyeliner, tick. Hair, tick (I have huge topknot envy). Voice, tick, tick, tick. The cover/duet she does with Caleb Followhill of Kings of Leon is amazing, and mentioned here previously.

Feist. She wore a sequined jumpsuit on an apple ad, appeared on Sesame Street, and made a beautiful duet with Ben Gibbard for the Dark Was the Night compilation, if you haven't listened to it you must.

Honorable mention to Sally Seltmann aka New Buffalo. I'm not quite as envious of her hair as the ladies above, but her voice is beautiful, she co-wrote Feist's 1234, did a cover of 4 Seasons in One Day, collaborated with Jens Lekman, and lives in Melbourne too.
I was somewhat disappointed to find most of the singerey lady types I love at the moment not only have the same hair, but it's all long and fringey and wavy. Perhaps because that's the opposite to mine and I'm jealous, but would welcome any short haired songstresses onto this list and into my iTunes with open arms .
