the prettiest star

I think well-cut white suits are my kryptonite. Especially if worn by someone playing The Prettiest Star or This Will Be Our Year for me on a white baby grand. I love the subversive decadence of louche men with shaggy beards and long hair wearing pristine, narrowly cut white dinner jackets. A white suit states an intention to be entirely impractical and a willingness to get very messy. They make me think of doubtful Graham Greene heroes sweating in the tropics, or Sebastian Flyte spiralling ever-downwards in Morocco. White suits don't denote innocence or purity, but the total opposite. Wearers attract trouble. Sweat, dirt and bloodstains are bound to sully an expensive white suit.

lo sono l'amore

Tilda Swinton is on my list of Women I want to be when I grow up, along with Anjelica Houston and quite a few others, which is part of why I really want to see this film. I hardly know anything about it, except that it's Italian and imdb says it's a 'tragic love story set at the turn of the millennium in Milan. The film follows the fall of the haute bourgeoisie due to the forces of passion and unconditional love.' But really that's enough for me, 'the fall of the haute bourgoisie'? Sounds great!

Also, it looks incredibly sexy, and the Italian title enhances that 'Lo Sono L'Amore', hot. And Tilda has a Russian accent!

I just watched the trailer twice. I love how there's almost no dialogue and also how the second half feels so much like the trailer for or opening of a movie made decades ago. I'm sorry I'm being so vague, it was really evocative while I watched it, but now I'm not entirely sure what of...

Anyway if you've seen it, or know more about it, tell me, I want to know!

what a great night

My did we have fun this weekend!
I'm very tired and hungover so here are some photos of pretty lights from Franklin Road in Ponsonby.
Things I like today include: cheap hamburgers with extra cheese, Lou and her jet-setting ways, bloody marys, white carnations, fifties skirts, dirty hip-hop, hairobics and the "Requiem for a Gleet" episode of Deadwood. Oh, and my Dad for taking one look at the wasps' nest outside my house and saying he'll be round next weekend to deal to it, and will bring something to spray on the scarily prolific ivy. Thanks, Dad.

PS. I'm thinking of buying some grey marle, two toned hareem pants. My flatmate said they look like an elephant's vagina. She's totally right, I don't even know why I like them. But I do. I like the idea of showing up to work at the Opera wearing two toned grey marle hareem pants - I'll be extremely comfortable, and all my lovely, kindly, Aunty-esque colleagues will be totally amused. And what am I here for, if not to amuse?
